Jason Vande Brake is an American stage actor, voice-over artist, and voice actor who provided the voice of the Combine Grunts in Half-Life: Alyx.

Biography[edit]

Brake holds an MFA in Acting from the UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts. In his 25 years of acting experience, Brake has acted in stage productions at theatres across the United States, including at Berkeley Rep, the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C., the McCarter Theatre Center in Princeton, and the San Francisco, Hollywood and New York Fringe Festivals, among others, and has provided voice over work in many commercials.[1]

In 2014, Brake branched out into voice acting in video games, lending his voice to numerous characters in Blizzard Entertainment's Hearthstone,[2] including Gnomenapper, Gnarlroot, Cauldron Elemental, and others.[1] He then provided additional voice work for the English-language versions of Mobius Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem Heroes, Elex, and SpellForce 3 before returning to Blizzard to participate in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, lending his voice to the male Lightforged Draenei, Gurgthock, and Overseer Korgus. His next performances were as George von Krone in Soulcalibur VI and several characters in SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions.[2]

When the first trailer for Half-Life: Alyx premiered on November 21, 2019, Brake revealed on Twitter that he would be involved with the game but could not comment further.[3] On March 12, 2020, Brake took to Twitter to announce that he would be providing the voice of the Combine Grunts, commenting: "As a Half-Life fan from waaaay back, I'm BEYOND thrilled to announce that I'm voicing the role of "Grunt" (a.k.a. Combine Soldier callsign Echo-One)".[4]
