ValveTime is a gaming news website and community about the games produced by Valve. It was originally created as HalfLife2.net when Half-Life 2 was first announced in March 2003. It was renamed to ValveTime in 2012.

History[edit]

HalfLife2.net was founded on March 18, 2003 by Daniel "Munro" Turk[1] upon the announcement of Half-Life 2, intending it to be a news hub for the game as well as a community for fans of the series.[2][3]

HalfLife2.net was heavily involved in the Half-Life 2 ARG that ran in 2004, with a HalfLife2.net user, Merc, sharing photos with its community of his trip to Valve for a playtest that led to the discovery of the ARG.[4] The ARG being aimed towards HalfLife2.net was noted by Valve itself by the congratulatory message of its first unlocked page: "Hello halflife2.net. Your cleverness is noted; you've passed the first test." Around this time, Valve's Greg Coomer also joined the forums,[5] sharing ARG hints and a few pre-release screenshots of Half-Life 2.[6]

On February 28, 2012, administrator Hectic Glenn announced the rebranding of HalfLife2.net to ValveTime,[7] with the new website being launched on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, after a brief delay.[8] A new community-made logo was chosen by the team and announced on May 12, 2012.[9] The new name was chosen after accidentally coming across the available domain after entertaining other names, such as "Valved".[2]

On March 2020, after a cybersquatter took over the former "valvetime.net" domain, ValveTime moved to the domain "valvetime.co.uk".[10]

ValveTime ran a regular series of "News Round-Up" videos on YouTube from March 24, 2012 until September 20, 2016.[11]

ValveTime announced a relaunch on December 1, 2019, coinciding with the announcement of Half-Life: Alyx.[12] However, the last post on the official ValveTime website was a happy New Year message on January 1, 2020 by administrator Chris "Chris D" Deeming,[13] with no subsequent updates as of 2025.
