Forum:Spoiler:chell's parent at aperture is her dad?
After searching on the interwebs for a picture of the science project with "by chell" on it i noticed something on this picture http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/594683394294528948/53F99E8B12D9CA1070087E748200EB49B346F479/
If you look above the bit near the procedures line of text ,which is preety much unreadable, u can see next to a picture of some sort of bag with the aperture science logo on it and underneath it directly it says in small letters that are just about readable "special ingrediant from dad's work" Now this therefore begs the question that if the "ingrediant" is from aperture , and it's from her dad's work, then surely it means her dad worked at aperture.
That makes sense. Although I've been wondering about the age discrepancy; Chell was supposedly put into stasis right after she was captured along with the rest of the take-your-daughter-to-work crowd, but she looks like someone in her 20's, not the 7 or 8-year-old who would have written the crayon scrawl on the posterboard.
Also taking into account Portal: Lab Rat we know she was in the test cycle before or very soon after GlaDOS took over (a clean-shaven and still business-suited Doug Rattan is the one fast-tracking her to be test subject #1).
So how could a young girl Chell, daughter of an Aperture employee, exist along with our Chell, test subject and 20-something? --DuctJackson 03:47, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
She could have been an employee as well, forced into testing when the other employees were forced into testing. Maybe she got the job because of family connections? That would have allowed her to be tested, and subsequently rejected from the test program, before GlaDOS went completely, totally rogue. -- Alexcranson 05:46, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
Nope, nevermind. The potato experiment is too much evidence; she just had to be the one who made the super potato that grew into the ceiling. Perhaps her file was labeled as "too tenacious" after GLaDOS or a subservient employee under GLaDOS's bidding had performed preliminary testing on her as a child along with all the other children she captured during Bring Your Daughter To Work Day...
Remember, B.Y.D.T.W.D. was the first day she locked down the entire ApSci facility, and shortly thereafter the Combine invasion left the poor captured staff and their daughters in GLaDOS's hands permanently. I can see how she was initially tested as a 8 year-old, rejected from further tests as judged by the surviving scientific staff, and then later bumped to the top of the list by Rattmann after GLaDOS kills off nearly the entire remaining Adult staff. This reconciles the plot pretty well, I think. Alexcranson 06:16, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
You seem to forget that Glados takeover was Retconned to Bring Your Cat To Work Day.
Chell visited Aperture as a kid and presented her potato project. SOMETHING happened that cuased that part of the labs to be shut down, if you look youll see a old early 90's sscanner/printer in the room and the paper the banner is made out of is from the early 90's as well since it has those things you tear off on each side of the paper. This put this areaa older then the main of Aperture.
Chell came back later and due to her dads connection got a part time job. When Glados took over on Bring your Cat to Work Day Chell was put in stasis probably by her father. Then Portal 1. SajuukKhar 06:21, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
I'm sure others have seen this, but could Chell's Parents be Caroline and Cave Johnson? http://i51.tinypic.com/dq6fs7.png I isolated a figure on the left and brightened the image there. Squii
I tend to believe that Chell is the daughter of Cave Johnson and Caroline. Its clear her parentage is linked directly to the company, but other aspects have hinted it goes deeper. Cave seemed to think Caroline wouldnt be able to take on the company after he passed, and a logical conclusion would be a child.
Once GLaDOS realises that Chell is her daughter, her attitude to killing her shifts dramatically, and the Opera from the turrets at the endgame bring very strong elements of a mother-daughter relationship. Her surname is redacted as a test subject as a security risk, and it appears to be company protocal to test the children of employees as stated by GLaDOS in Portal 1. Drake3011 15:34, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
Again Drake, you're making some out of place conclusions. In fact, Cave specifically mentions how Caroline can run the company. He goes out out his way to make sure she takes over. I don't see where you get the idea he didn't think she could, unless you mean him mentioning she'd rather not do it. Again, he unquestionably believes she's capable of running the business. You're running a lot of information without a solid base. Not saying one might not become apparent in the future, but I just don't see how that would work out.
Being a major BioShock fan, I'd have to relate your conclusion to saying Eleanor is Subject Delta's daughter. The game files reveal even the developers had such an idea, but trashed it likely due to how obvious it'd be. We can't make such clear connections, as it dulls the gameplay overall with more generic themes. ~Ṃᶒɠą§ɔîéɳčę { talk } 15:49, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
Ok, ok. So, let's say that Caroline is hesitant to take over the company but gets pressured into doing it (as Cave said "You make her do it!")... and I remember Wheatley saying that the Overseer of the facility replaces "himeslf" with a "copy of himself" which left Wheatley the pitiful task of watching over the humans. Could it be that Caroline deliberately had herself uploaded as an A.I. in order to retire and raise her kid? It makes sense... now here's the kicker: I think it was fatal. I think all of the uploads of personalities into Personality Spheres were fatal. That would explain the missing astronauts and the personality sphere obsessed with going into space, and the use of military subjects and that macho personality sphere who wanted to take over for Chell during the final battle against Wheatley. That would also explain GLaDOS's choice of words when she says that she found where Caroline "lives" inside her.
And, of course in the true Aperture Science way, I thin k the uploads were fatal because they rushed things without testing them well enough. That's also why most of the spheres are corrupt. Alexcranson 16:25, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
Wait, gotta take part of that back: the Astronauts were missing since the 1970's, prior to the AI development.. but I assume they were forcibly held for A.I. infusion anyways. Why else would there be A.I.'s obsessed with going into space? Alexcranson 18:13, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
Ok, maybe that was badly worded, i did mean that she didnt think she could, and the child would be what impares her so she refuses. its this idea as to why i think she would be her mother, because it clearly depicts why GLaDOS would be so rampantly violent and psychopathic towards humans. She looses her husband and all she has is her child, but under Cave's orders, she is put into the machinary, as Alexcranson mentioned, possibly killing her, and making the fact chell was an Orphan true.
I understand your hesitation at the idea MegaScience, it's simply a clash of opinions so i'll leave it from the wiki, but its a concept that seems too plausable to me to abandon, it just feels like all the clues are there within the franchise, and valve just want us to interpret it ourselves Drake3011 20:37, April 25, 2011 (UTC) ––––
alexcranson, could it be possible that Cave Johnson is not actual "Overseer" at aperture, although he is convinced otherwise? could he be a puppet for aperture in the same sense that breen is a puppet for the combine? all of this is mere speculation, but if there is a parent organization that is using aperture as a "shower curtain" for their experiments/inventions, it would shed light on why the chain of events in half life 1 began to take place after BYCTWD, when glados took over the facility, and after chell is trapped at aperture. it would also help explain why eli vance is frightened by the reappearance of the borealis, more importantly about the combine finding it. im still convinced eli vance stole the gravity gun from aperture.... Trunk_slamchest 20:59, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
Actually, I think Caroline was the Overseer, and Wheatley improperly called her a Him. Johnson died befor the A.I. technology was ready. Alexcranson 22:24, April 25, 2011 (UTC)
---
Wheatley never mentions the overseer of the facility. He says "I almost got a job in manufacturing once." He meant the overseer of production. Squii
Yeah, my mistake. Wheatley was talking about the foreman... Alexcranson 17:57, April 26, 2011 (UTC)
It also seem like we can be sure that Chell was in fact an employee of some sort at Aperture, as in Portal 1, GLaDOS mentions her "personnel file" during the boss fight. She could be lying about the existence of a personnel file, but I see no real reason for that.-MattyG7
---
Any test subject would need a personnel file, as seen in Lab Rat. She indeed has a file. Squii

per·son·nel/ˌpərsəˈnel/ Noun: People employed in an organization or engaged in an organized undertaking such as military service. Additionally, as GLaDOS comments on her not even being a full-time employee, that does suggest that she might be a part-time employee.-MattyG7

Okay, I have one big logic problem, the one I alluded to in my OP:
First, Chell's name is on the science project, which was put there on Take your Daughter to Work day, the day GlaDOS went Hal on everyone. The writing on the science project is that of an 8 year old girl, maximum.
However, the Chell we know is in her 20's, and it was Doug Rattmann who put her at the very *top* of the list of test subjects at most *days* after GlaDOS took over.
So how did she age so much if she was the first test subject? Was it during stasis? Or was there an interim period before stasis when the questionnaire was conducted for her testing profile? --DuctJackson 03:24, April 28, 2011 (UTC)
The way I see it is, GLaDOS tried to kill everyone on BYDTW day, was fitted with the morality core, and they locked away that part of the lab, leaving all the decorations as-is. Some time later Chell is employed by Aperture, and GLaDOS finally does take over, either killing employees or turning them into test subjects. However, this is just my opinion.MattyG7 05:52, April 28, 2011 (UTC)
- I agree with your theory in fact i have my own thread about how the timeline works over here. It solves all the problems with Chell's age. http://half-life.wikia.com/index.php?title=Forum:Aperture_Timeline_Retcon_Most_are_Missing&t=20110429102455 SajuukKhar 12:15, April 29, 2011 (UTC)
You guys are really starting to bug me. Portal 2: Lab rat takes place AFTER Portal 1! and it was confirmed that Doug Rattman was Alive During Portal 1! And when put in certain Stasis one might still age depending on the environmental conditions, so it might be that she was Maintained while still in Stasis, Eg. making sure Clothes fit, such as her jumpsuit. - You seem to be forgetting that half of Lab Rat was a flashback to before portal 1. SajuukKhar 11:44, May 1, 2011 (UTC)
