Who made this? the Cat is not an "unknown person or thing", it is a CAT! A CAT! Clearly, the first test subject was A CAT, that likely went horribly wrong.

Not once, but twice[edit]
The cat was mentioned twice, remember? Barney says something to Gordon during HL2: "Did you hear a cat just now?" and "I still have nightmares about that cat." It's possible that there are still hidden references to the cat, but thorough player combing almost makes this an impossibility.
