From my last experiences playing this game, I noticed it is possible to skip this battle. When you defeat the pit worm, you are able to connect the bridge and get across. However, I remember being able to jump to the other end of the bridge. This will have you lose a decent amount of health, because the jump is very far and you might get attacked, but I think it is quite possible and I'll need someone to back me up on this.
