The Section A-17 Prototype Labs (known internally as RAI-001) are an old lab location, where early work on the concept of teleportation was done.

History[edit]
Early Years[edit]
In 1981, Black Mesa decided to try pursuing a whole new field of research; local teleportation. To this end, they repurposed Silo 7, one of the old missile launch complexes, and turned into a lab. They recruited four scientists for this work; Walter Bennett, Harold Messner, Stephen Rosenberg, and [UNKNOWN] Simmons. After a long while of experimenting, they managed to get the fields working, only to hit an unexpected roadblock.
The Borderworld[edit]
Upon the first teleportation experiment. the scientists were surprised to find themselves not on Earth, but an entirely different world. From there, they worked on getting two-way teleportation working.
The Borderworld (cont.)[edit]
The year after that, in 1982, they started studying the local ecosystem, and the expedition teams grew in size. Soon, they had made a protective suit, and were now studying the world.
The "Focal Point" of the research[edit]
Three years after that, in 1985, they realized that strange orange crystals were somehow involved in the teleportation process (all five two-way teleportation tests succeeded in close proximity). With this knowledge, they started work on a "focal point" triangulation relay, that they presumed would assist in the process. Two years later, they managed to finish their work, designating the site Research Site Lambda.
The Decline[edit]
After several incidents (CRSD causing the collapse and abandonment of Research Site Alpha, the native aliens establishing a facility so close to the focal point) the A-17 labs were slowly phased out, and in subsequent years, were completely superseded by the Lambda Complex which the used to cooperate with. Finally, in 1996, the Prototype labs were decommissioned, with personnel being reassigned to various posts in the facility.
Reacquisition[edit]
In 2004, [NAME REDACTED], a spy sent by the Biodome Complex to intercept a delivery to the Freight Yard, ended up going past his assigned mission, and discovered some old files related to this lab. Having recently had an accident in the Lambda Complex, and being sent to somewhere outside Xen, he figured he could use it to reestablish contact with the other world. He recruited staff from all throughout Black Mesa (including A-17's original staff) and established an operation inside the newly refurbished labs. Under orders from his new equine masters, a "mass emigration" project became this lab's new purpose.
Components[edit]
Entrance/Hub[edit]
The entrance to the lab is accessed through a sheet of plywood in the main wall of the Freight Yard's basement. Passing through that leads to a big room, which houses both the keypad-protected main access door, or the bigger storage door. The main door is protected by a keypad, which is uniquely dual-coded. The first code is "120" and the second one is "599", opening this door reveals the elevator shaft, which due to this area's original purpose, is shaped like a rocket silo. The elevator shaft has three levels, but only levels #2 and #3 are accessible. in Level #3, there are two boarded up doors to the left and right. Going straight ahead leads to the security station, which is guarded by two autonomous robots. There is a door there, guarded by a handprint scanner. Past that door is a big fan, then the "hub" area which links the four sections together which has a cafeteria.
A-17A: Offices[edit]
To the left of the hub is the door to the office, which is composed of the following divisions:
- Public Outreach (first one seen)
- Emigration Management (second one)
The door can only be opened from the other side.
A-17B: Lab Access[edit]
Accessed from the right side of the hub, this door is guarded by another autonomous drone, along with another handprint scanner. Past this door is another door, guarded by a retinal scanner. To activate the device, two authorized scientists (or one scientist and one unwitting security guard) must insert their keycards, which causes the power systems to start up, the other scientist must then interact with the Initialization Console, which enables coolant flow and unlocks the controls. The teleporter itself requires the Focal Point be turned on for proper usage, otherwise it defaults to pointing towards Research Site Lambda.

- The main door's two part code "120" and "599" are a reference to the birthday of [REDACTED], a native who the head researcher had caught feelings for during his time in the other world.
