Name[edit]

It seems to me that Restrictor is the more proper name for this, while 'thumper' is just the Resistance slang term. Should we rename it? --MattyDienhoff 06:13, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

I was thinking the same thing when I edited this last, glad to see you changed it. :)
Well, we don't call turrets sterilizers or headcrab zombies necrotics, do we? Plus, the entity and models all say thumper. -- Fireman V2
By the way, does anyone have a picture of the Xen Restricter/Thumper? (Strat-N8 00:40, 20 January 2009 (UTC))
Ah, good point! I don't think so, so that's another item for my to-do list. --MattyDienhoff 02:03, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

Alternate Explanation[edit]

I found this on the BMS forums, and it's actually a good idea. The theory is that the thumpers sound like a Tentacle tapping on the ground, which would be the antlions' natural enemy if you think about it. It has the extra benefit of scaring off the Tentacle itself, too, because it actually is bothered by it. Any comments?

That's an interesting theory! The "lots of vibrations overload the Antlion's senses" explanation always seemed a bit contrived and arbitrary to me, but the idea that antlions fear tentacles makes plenty of sense, especially if you consider the fact that tentacles 'burrow' too, meaning they'd probably also like sandy environments. --MattyDienhoff «talk» 06:22, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

wild theory[edit]

i remember seeing somo sort of whumper-like things during the original half life while in Xen... may have been on Interloper or Gonarchs Lair, not sure thogh.

Entity[edit]

Thumpers have their onw dedicated entity, Prop_thumper. --Fireman V2

Reference[edit]

The thumper seems to be an indirect reference to the book Dune, where they also used objects called thumpers, but for the opposite purpose - they attracted massive sandworms instead of keeping them away.

Nova Prospekt thumpers[edit]

They're bigger.

But are they more effective? Different "thump" rate?
