Re: Shotgun Soldiers

hey there. Well, shotgun soldiers do appear in HL2, and Episode two. as far as episode 1, I don't know, because I really haven't played episode 1 very much. but if I find a shotgun soldier in episode 1, I'll let you know.

Ok, I have found many shotgun soldiers in episode 1 now that I've had the chance to fight some combine. (in the first few levels, you kill them with the super gravity gun before they can really get you too bad, and their guns disintegrate, so it's hard to tell what weapon they had.) --Charles II 19:19, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

That's okay. I remember my first few steps as a new administrator on the English Wikipedia (well over a year ago now)... I certainly didn't jump into it guns blazing. (now I'm an admin on four different Wikimedia sites in addition to this one, so the admin tools are as natural to me as editing) Like I said, I like knowing the project is covered in the event that I'm not around. I'd hate for some vandal to sweep through and have free reign just because I decided to hang out with friends instead of staying home. :)

Infoboxhelp

Hi Matty, I don't know if you are the one to ask, but I tried experimenting a little on Template:Character Infobox‎ (an example of result, see Alyx Vance. However, the new section of the infobox looks a bit "off" compared to the other sections. Can you fix that? The code looks VERY confusing to me (and I've even seen a couple o' infoboxes in my life already) --ligemeget 10:16, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I see what you mean, the new sections are slightly out of line. I'm as lost as you (probably more so) when it comes to complex templates, so we'll just have to wait until EVula drops in and see if there's anything he can do with it.

Spawning In-Game

Why did you delete the Spawning In-Game section? I've had some good feedback on it and it's really annoying when you want to spawn something but don't know how to do it. O.K the Elite and Prison Guards weren't to helpful I admit but other people can add to that if they know how which helps me and helps everyone else who wants to spawn that entity. I did it because I think having such in-depth information about spawning entities is out of place in an encyclopedia article. You don't need to describe in detail how to spawn NPCs in each and every NPC article, because that information is of limited interest and can nonetheless be found in Console commands, where it belongs. (On that note, perhaps it would be a good idea to link to that from the 'entity name' infobox section?) Anyway, it's unnecessary to have an entire section to list entity names in each game because it could in most cases be compressed to fit nicely into the infobox.

For example, rather than listing the entity name for each and every game in the series, you could fit that information in the infobox because in most cases there are only two entity names. monster_headcrab and npc_headcrab for GoldSource and Source respectively, for example. Of course, there may sometimes be additional notes on the subject that wouldn't fit in the infobox, perhaps you could put those in trivia. Either way I think it'd be much neater done that way. I'm sorry to undo all your hard work, but it wouldn't have worked out this way if you had discussed the idea before carrying it out. I really,really prefer it if people would discuss big changes (or ones that affect a lot of articles, like this one) to see what others think of the idea before going ahead and doing them. --MattyDienhoff 04:49, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

It's just that when you compare the his contribs and the contribs from the IP, they're never at the same time. And I think once he was connected with its proper username behind this IP. I don't know. Could I actually become admin? I know i'm only 14 (nearly 15) and alot of people think that because i'm only 14 I don't really know alot about anything, but I do. Half-Life is one of my strongest points. I have made some good edits such as adding a few walkthroughs and a couple of chapters. I have also made some bad edits which I should have run by/discussed with you or someone else in admin first such as the Spawning in-game section (thanks for not going mad at me, like some people would have). I know I probably won't become admin, but I was just wondering if I could. I also have alot of free time (most of the time, occasionally I will be really busy with Homework etc. but not very often as I do it during lunchtimes at school). So, just wondering... You're not qualified. Period. And I just don't see how being given more privileges would be useful to your contribs or the website. And you never reread yourself. You make huge spelling mistakes. English is not even my native language, and I don't think everyone here without exception noticed it. You're enthusiastic, cool, but that's not enough. You don't beg for being an admin, you deserve it. Users are never "tested out". They are tested before being given more privileges, not during or after. You have to be qualified in several fields before anything can be done. Otherwise anyone would be appointed and every wiki in the web would collapse. Enemies article

Had an idea which is on Wikiraider (Tomb Raider Wiki). OK, on Wikiraider there is an article that lists all of the enemies in all of the games, comics, films etc. This really helped me when I didn't have a clue what all their names were. Would it be a good idea to have an article like this on the Combine Overwiki for people who may be new to Half-Life and don't have a clue about any of the enemies names? It would only take me a few minutes to do if it's alright as I know pretty much every HL enemy in every game. --Donovan-j-charlie 21:03, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

I considered creating a seperate category for enemies in each game, but for the moment I've written off the idea, for two reasons:

1. Most of the enemies appear in more than one game, so many articles would end up being added to almost every new 'enemies in game' category, which would get pretty messy pretty quickly. Anyway, which game each enemy appears in is already covered in the various enemy templates and the enemy articles themselves.
2. If we sub-categorized enemies by game, we'd have to do the same for other elements like weapons (for the sake of consistency), and that could also get confusing pretty quickly.

AR2 Article

You may know me as the guy who made that part in the AR-2 trivia about that it had simularities with the M4 {Ar-15}.Why exactly did you delete it??

Because the two have nothing to do with one another. You mistakenly believe they do because you apparently have a shaky understanding of these matters. You wrote:

Firstly, an M4 Carbine is not an AR-15. The AR-15 is an assault rifle design upon which the military M16 rifle is closely based, and the M4 is a variant of the M16. So the M4 is related to the AR-15, but it's not an AR-15.

Secondly, AR-15 stands for Armalite model 15, not Assault Rifle model 15 (If you don't believe me, ask Wikipedia).

Thirdly, the Pulse Rifle's internal designation "AR2" simply means Assault Rifle 2. It's a generic name. The "assault rifle" is an entire class of weaponry. The AR-15 -- as well as the M16 and M4 which are based on the AR-15 -- is just one of many assault rifle designs. The reason the Pulse Rifle is called 'AR2' comes from the earlier development stages of the game when there were going to be two assault rifles, the AR1 - which was an AK-47 and was to be the Resistance weapon of choice - and the AR2 - which was an XM-29 OICW and was to be the Combine weapon of choice. Both were cut and the Combine incendiary rifle was reused as the Pulse Rifle we know so well today, making it the only assault rifle, used only by the Combine, so it took over the OICW's designation, 'AR2'. See Weapons cut from Half-Life 2 for more info.

So as you can see the AR2 Pulse Rifle and the AR-15 have little in common and not even the meanings of their acronyms are the same. To assume they're related design-wise because their titles are similar is nonsense. --MattyDienhoff ^«talk» 05:25, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh, I thought the two were seperate, that "Tactics" would discuss the tactics used by the enemy, and "Counter measures" would be the tactics that could be used against them, but I guess information about the enemy's tactics could go elsewhere in the overview.

On the other choices, my preference is bolded:

• Appearances and role / Appearances
• Personality and skills / Characteristics

Enemies

• Application / Employment

Weapons

While I realize it can be considered rude to edit a person's userpage without permission, removing a broken link is purely housekeeping and I don't see how you could object to that. Something is wrong with Klow

Matty, you might not know it but I was testing out Klow to see if he is Once of the best admins in the world, Wikia allowed me to test him out. Thats why I've been doing silly stuff on the wiki, it's for the best of Klow. Somehow, he doesn't believe me, neither I don't know why. We've been friends for who knows how long. You can help me out. Can you tell Klow, I am not joking around. I think he needs proof somehow. I also added you to my friends on youtube. Did you see my Fake Episode Three vids? It's a big hit! You got nice vids as well (not the best though to be honest). Please help me out Matty, help your ol pal Mega Sean 45. I even offered him something he wanted, he wouldn't listen. Firstly, your perception that we're friends is entirely one-sided, you're just an acquaintance and fellow contributor to me. Sorry if that disappoints you, I'm not trying to be mean, it's just true. :)

Secondly, no I haven't. Half-Life Machinima doesn't interest me.

And thirdly, I have I hard time believing Wikia would employ anyone to test administrators. Why would they need to? These communities are self-regulating and if there were any major problems with, say, corrupt admins letting their egos run away with them, ordinary contributors could notify Wikia staff of the issue to have it dealt with. Not only that, as long as you know what to look for, it's easy to tell just from looking at an admin's work whether they're cut out for the job or not, you don't need to troll them. And even if they did employ admin testers, I have a hard time believing they'd give the job to anyone as unprofessional as you (no offense, but your hijinks here, ostensibly to 'test Klow', aren't the only things you've done that are unprofessional. At times, if I didn't know better, I'd guess that English was your second language.)

Suffice to say, I believe that your revelation that you're some kind of Wikia-sanctioned angel sent to try admins' patience is just a more complex version of the "My cousin did it!" argument, and you'll have a hard time convincing me otherwise. Sean, if you mess around here again like you did way back I am going to ban you for a very long time. I'm getting sick of whatever you are doing here. This "test" is a total lie, I am almost one hundred percent sure of it. You have made no substantial contributions here, and seemingly only wish to promote your videos. Now you wish to start some flame war with Klow, someone who has put vast amounts of time and effort into this Wiki. Some important questions a;sp immediately arise. Why in the world would you have to test him when anyone paying attention can see the good he does? Why just him and no one else? Why do you suddenly start with this greatest admins in the world stuff?

The fact is, I think you still want adminship and seeing that the current bureaucrats do not wish to give it to you, you are pulling out this truly stupid ploy. That or you have turned to pure trolling out of boredom. That also explains why you are only annoying them and not me, because I don't have the power to promote you. Mega Sean. Or should I say Mini Sean. I laughed very hard with your nonsense yesterday, and I didn't even want to answer anymore, it was so pointless. But now it's getting less and less funny. Now you're saying something is wrong with me? We have always been very patient with you and your advertisement for your very poor videos, because that didn't hurt anyone. But now you're starting trolling and spamming our talk pages and taking your "greatest admin" nonsense on a higher level. This is just like the emails saying "Microsoft asked that you send this email to all your contacts or you will have to pay MSN messenger and a meteorite will crash on your house". A lot of people believe that "serious" organizations ask their users to do some job for them, while this is totally unprofessional, but don't think we are that kind of people. We really know better. Just stop wasting our time because it won't be funny forever and even though your absence from this Wiki would really help us improving it (no offense), I'd be sorry for you to see you blocked for an indefinite amount of time.
