The Xen Clam is a surface-mounted Xen creature that first appears in Half-Life: Alyx.

Overview[edit]

Xen Clams, like all other kinds of Xen fauna and flora, appear most commonly in the City 17 Quarantine Zone, where they are found in tight clusters. They are small, sessile creatures with approximately the size of a mouse and two clamshell-like jaws with a round "mouth" inside. When an organic being approaches a cluster of Xen Clams, they will begin violently snapping their jaws, which causes minor damage and emits a loud clicking noise. Clams pose very little threat to large, mobile organisms such as humans due to their immobility and small size.

Behind the Scenes[edit]

Originally, Xen Clams are merely designed to add visual flavor to the map and were only lightly interactive. They would only shut close once when the player approaches them instead of repeatedly snapping. However when developing the chapter Jeff, the developers decided to use the Clams as a type of noise hazard, thus making them emit the loud sound heard in the final game, which would attract Jeff.[1]
