Heart of Evil is a single-player modification for Half-Life, developed by Nathan Ruck. It consists of six episodes, which were released on the internet over the years. It is set in a fictional version of Vietnam, during the Vietnam War, inspired by Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979).

Overview[edit]

The player takes the role of Captain Percy Freeman, a special forces officer who is assigned the task of tracking down and assassinating the renegade Colonel Kurtz. He is accompanied by Private Barney, a seemingly slow-witted man noted for his strength and occasional technical expertise. Percy and Barney are airlifted by the Air Cavalry to a drop site by Sergeant Kilmore, but as soon as Kilmore discovers the true nature of Freeman's mission, he and the rest of the air and ground forces in the area turn on the pair and attempt to capture and kill them both to keep them from "tak[ing] the Colonel away". Surrounded on all sides by people who want them dead and facing betrayal at every corner, Percy and Barney make their way through an increasingly bizarre and anachronistic version of Vietnam and encounter prostitutes, killer gorillas, a zombie outbreak in the Raccoon military base, and even Satanist Vortigaunts. Finally, the pair reach Kurtz, who imprisons Percy, decapitates Barney and waxes lyrical to Percy about the horrors of war before explaining his plans to use the zombies to take over the world. Percy escapes his prison by playing an arcade machine of Half-Life and kills Kurtz - thus becoming the new zombie overlord.
