Operation: Black Mesa is an upcoming third-party reimagining of Gearbox Software's Half-Life: Opposing Force and Half-Life: Blue Shift, developed by community team Tripmine Studios. It will include two single player campaigns based on each expansion pack, which will be expanded with new gameplay and content, including new plot elements to better connect these stories to the rest of the Half-Life and Portal universe.[2]
Contents
Plot[edit]
Operation: Black Mesa follows two parallel stories set during the Black Mesa Incident. In the first chronologically - Guard Duty, the player assumes the role of security guard Barney Calhoun, who attempts to escape the Black Mesa Research Facility after an experiment gone wrong triggers an invasion from the alien world of Xen and subsequently - a military cover-up. The second follows Corporal Adrian Shephard, one of the marines sent in to cover-up the incident by eliminating the Black Mesa staff, who is separated from his unit and forced to try to escape the facility after the mission goes wrong.[2]
Gameplay[edit]
Operation: Black Mesa is a fast paced first-person shooter, featuring over 18 weapons suited for multiple play styles.[2]
Characters[edit]
- Adrian Shephard
- Barney Calhoun
- Black Mesa Science Team members
- Black Mesa Security Force members
- Hazardous Environment Combat Unit members[2]
- The G-Man[3]
Enemies[edit]
The full game is set to include over 30 unique enemy types.[2]
Weapons[edit]
While most of the known arsenal is identical to the originals, O:BM diverges by having Barney use a flashlight as a melee weapon instead of a crowbar.[11].
Development[edit]
Initially, Operation: Black Mesa and the similarly community-produced Source engine remake of Blue Shift, Guard Duty, were being developed by two separate teams. However, the original version of O:BM was cancelled, and the remaining teams came together, forming Tripmine Studios. The projects were merged, with Guard Duty being the title of the game's Blue Shift campaign.[14]
Soundtrack[edit]
Operation: Black Mesa will include two soundtracks, one for each campaign,[2] with original music composed by Lono.[1]
