"Well, I think that given our situation, your irrational fear of the dark is actually quite appropriate. You know, I can give you easily a hundred reasons to be terrified."
Russell to Alyx Vance[src]

The Drainage Tunnels[1] are a Quarantine Zone location featured in the second chapter of Half-Life: Alyx, The Quarantine Zone.

Overview[edit]

The Drainage Tunnels are a massive subterranean infrastructural complex, spanning across vast distances under City 17. They comprise mainly of brick sewage networks and maintenance passageways, as well as various underground municipal service facilities such as warehouses and offices. The place is under severe Xen infestation, and was possibly once the asylum for human refugees. As recalled by Alyx Vance, the Combine has been moving supplies into this area, presumably to support the operation of the Vault, and the Infestation Control also had a prominent presence there, as evidenced by the plethora of hazmat equipments littered in and around the tunnels. However, due to reasons unknown, all the workers and soldiers stationed there are either killed or zombified at some point, leaving their cadavers scattered about untended. This is where Alyx Vance acquires her shotgun and flashlight from the corpses of Zombies, and it is also where the Armored Headcrab first appears.

Part of Gary's hideout is built into the tunnels, and his murals and impaled prey can be found in the proximity of his dwelling. At one point the tunnels escalate to ground level, leading to the grounds of an industrial plant. Later it descends again into a basement that was used as storage for explosive oil drums and jerricans but has since been overgrown with Xen flora, Barnacles and Zombies. To proceed further, Alyx must go through the basement to retrieve a detached shutter door handwheel without detonating the barrels. After opening the shutter door, she is finally able to ascend to her destination, Fairview Junction.
