Overview[edit]
The abode was constructed by the Vortigaunt Gary after he managed to escape the Combine, having been held and tortured by them. It is situated beside a canal in the Quarantine Zone and is near the maintenance rooms of Metro Area station. Just outside the entrance to the hideout, there is an array of cardboard pieces levitated midair by green electricity, resembling an eye shape when observed from afar, hinting at the presence of a paranormal being. Behind the cardboard array is a hole in the wall leading to the canal, where multiple cryptic murals depicting the past and future can be found. The entrance is blocked by a makeshift door mechanism which is controlled by a panel with a matrix of buttons on it. The only way to know the correct button combination to unlock the door is by letting free another box of cardboard and letting them float in the air, covering parts of the murals which reveal the key. Behind the mechanical door is a maze of tunnels, in which more glowing murals and impaled Headcrabs can be found.
The hideout itself has another door in the center of a spiral of metal boards. Beside it is a fire bell that can be ringed to summon Gary. Inside his room are several cages containing captured Headcrabs and a simple kitchen where he cooks his prey. A shutter door at the back leads to a cavernous well, where Gary creates sculptures of the future from scrap. This well is connected with the underground Drainage Tunnels of City 17. Gary lives in this hideout in solitude, doing presumably nothing other than hunting Headcrabs, cooking, and creating his prophetic artworks.
