"X-Ray Zulu, are you there? We need backup in the waste sector. It's some sort of worm creature. Tower and Eddy are down, and I've lost contact with the rest of the squad! We need backup now! Now, damn it, now!"
― HECU Marine[src]

The Waste Processing Area 3 is a Black Mesa Research Facility location featured in Half-Life and its expansion Opposing Force.

In Half-Life, Gordon has to go through the area to enter the Lambda Bunker in the chapter Surface Tension. After being chased by a Gargantua in a parking area, he finds a Tactical Map and must use it to call in air strikes to destroy the entrance to the bunker in order to progress. The device was originally placed here by a HECU Marine named Cooper, now dead.

Half-Life: Opposing Force[edit]

In Opposing Force, a lower section of the facility is visited in the chapter Pit Worm's Nest. Shephard has to activate a bridge in order to progress, but there is a large alien creature Pit Worm blocking its path. He must flood the room with toxic waste to defeat the creature. The area is accessed through an air duct in the Biodome Complex.

Behind the scenes[edit]

  • The Pit Worm obstacle is similar, albeit less challenging, to the Tentacle puzzle in the Half-Life chapter Blast Pit, in that the player cannot simply use his weapons to defeat the creature, but must use the surrounding environment.
