The Weapon Box, also known as the Item Container, is a container used by the Black Mesa survey teams to carry weapons, ammunition, and items on Xen.

Overview

• Most of the time, weapon boxes are found throughout Xen near the remains of survey team members.

• In the multiplayer portion of the game, weapon boxes are dropped by dead players. When picked up, it gives the user ammunition and the last weapon used by the late player.

Behind the scenes

The Weapon Box appears to be based on the Backpack item from Quake which shares the same purpose. Originally, the number 3 was written on the Weapon Box instead of 8. This can be seen in the source file for the texture in the Half-Life SDK.
