The Times is a newspaper issued as recent as the period following the Combine's invasion of Earth.

Overview[edit]

Half-Life 2[edit]

The Times appears in Half-Life 2 on as a cutout of the front page on Eli Vance's corkboard in Black Mesa East. It includes a photo of Striders walking around a visibly damaged United Nations Secretariat Building in New York City, the banner headline revealing Earth surrendered after the Seven Hour War.

Half-Life: Alyx[edit]

The Times returns in Half-Life: Alyx in a similar fashion, this time with the texture being more detailed and legible. Its motto reads "Where the world turns for truth". The newspaper is specified as being the International Edition, listing the paper as "Europe's largest distribution". A photo of Dr. Breen standing at a podium is now visible. The article summarizes the capitulation of mankind to the Combine negotiated by Wallace Breen, speculation concerning the origins of the Portal Storms, and experts advising people to stay within their communities.

Elsewhere, billboards advertising the Shakespeare play Antony & Cleopatra playing at the Royal Theater include a positive review from The Times, the blurb calling it "Блестящий!", or "Glittering!" in Russian.

Portal with RTX[edit]

In Portal with RTX, the "EARTH SURRENDERS" newspaper front page is found crumpled on the floor in the Rattmann den in Test Chamber 17.

Behind the scenes[edit]

The Half-Life 2 preview image for the corkboard model seen in Black Mesa East shows that the newspaper was once called "The Tribune" during development.

In Half-Life: Alyx, http://thecyber-times.* (the top level domain is not visible) is the affiliated internet address listed on the front page of The Times newspaper located in the top right corner. The paper's barcode appears to be taken from a real world brand of bleach.[1]

Outside of the games, The Times is an actual British newspaper founded in 1785.
