Erik Wolpaw said that "at the end of the day there was improvisation in the sense that he'd take this written thing and make it sound like he was saying it off the top of his head", noting that since "video game characters tend to have a very deliberate line reading and often doesn't seem super natural", Valve "really wanted to try having a character that sounded like they were improvising their lines basically." The writer described Merchant as "a really great improvisational comic."
