Claire Hummel is an artist who worked at Valve.

Biography[edit]

Hummel attended Rhode Island School of Design where she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008. From 2007 to 2008, she provided concept art and print advertisements for Asheron's Call and The Lord of the Rings Online at Turbine, Inc. In 2012, she provided character concepts and visual development for BioShock Infinite at Irrational Games. In 2013, she taught character design as Adjunct Professor at DigiPen Institute of Technology. From 2012 to 2014, she provided production design and visual development work at Microsoft Studios. From 2014 to 2016, she provided production design for the VR game Westworld Awakening at HBO Digital Products. From 2016 to 2018, she was art director for In the Valley of Gods at Campo Santo. Following the acquisition of Campo Santo by Valve in April 2018, she joined the team in May 2018,[1] followed by Campo Santo coworker Olly Moss in August. There she contributed to Half-Life: Alyx.[2] She uses the nickname "Shoomlah" on her various social network accounts.

Work[edit]

For Half-Life: Alyx, Hummel created sketches for the game's promotional art, the Dog sketches found at Alyx's Hideout and designed Gary's mural found at the Vortigaunt Hideout. She also contributed to the human graphic design dating from before the Combine invasion such as the billboards seen in the City 17 Metro, various murals, safety posters, labels on food and drink props, brands and companies, and the keycards found at Terminal Gardens.[3]

She also created Half-Life: Alyx-themed stickers to be used in Steam chat,[4] the Half-Life-related stickers to apply on weapons in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive,[5][6] and the artwork for the Steam 20th Anniversary.[7]
