Stephen James Merchant is an English writer, director, radio presenter and comic actor who is the voice actor for Wheatley in Portal 2 and Lego Dimensions.
Biography[edit]
Merchant is best known for his collaborations with Ricky Gervais, as the co-writer and co-director of the popular British sitcom The Office, as the co-writer, co-director and a co-star of Extras, and as the co-host of The Ricky Gervais Show in its radio, podcast, audiobook and television show forms.
Work for Portal 2[edit]
The total length of Wheatley's voice lines spoken by Merchant is sixteen, about one and a half hour of which is used in-game. Erik Wolpaw said that "at the end of the day there was improvisation in the sense that he'd take this written thing and make it sound like he was saying it off the top of his head", noting that since "video game characters tend to have a very deliberate line reading and often doesn't seem super natural", Valve "really wanted to try having a character that sounded like they were improvising their lines basically." The writer described Merchant as "a really great improvisational comic."[2]
