Sector B,[2] referred to as Sector B Coolant Reserve,[3] is one of the seven main Sectors of the Black Mesa Research Facility.[3] It is connected to the Blue Line of the Black Mesa Transit System.[3]

Coolant Reservoir Facility[edit]

This location is a maintenance area for the coolant facility consisting of halls and rooms with metal walls, and featuring a small system of drainage tunnels. Before the incident, the double doors connecting Sector C to the area are guarded by a security guard, making the location restricted and inaccessible to Gordon Freeman. It is connected to a lower canal system through a large lift.

The canal is crossed by a footbridge that leads to a large elevator going up to the Administrator Center in Sector D, but it has collapsed following the Resonance Cascade. To cross the canal, several maintenance areas and labyrinthine corridors must be traversed from maintenance doors at the canal level, as well as a large and deep room featuring a track system for crate transportation, not in function during Freeman's visit.

Area 2 Administration Offices[edit]

As seen in the Security Shift Schedule given to Barney Calhoun, Sector B features an Area 2 Administration Offices. Two security guards started their Yellow (from 09:00 to 22:00) and Green (from 21:00 to 10:00) Shifts there on May 15, 200-.[4]

Sector B Line[edit]

Behind the scenes[edit]

The canal area of the Coolant Reservoir Facility was present in the 1997 version of the game and was initially much larger. The final rendition of the map includes many unused set pieces left over from the cut sections of the location. Moreover, the pre-release form of the hanging crates room appears to have featured a puzzle.

The appearances of the large lift, the entrance to the canal,[5] and the canal itself[6] were based on designs from the manga Akira.[7]
