Artificial Intelligence, or A.I, are computer system with human intelligence, and artificially embodies human intelligence in machines.
Artificial intelligence is a field that Aperture Science has mainly studied, with many Aperture Science robots, including GLaDOS, having artificial intelligence. Black Mesa also has basic artificial intelligence technology used for turret.
Aperture Science is the only group that has developed human-level A.I in Half-Life and Portal universe. Cave Johnson, CEO of Aperture Science, has begun brain-mapping and artificial intelligence technology research to back up his personality so he can run the company even after he dies. But when he was in danger of dying even before the technology was completed, he appointed his secretary Caroline as successor without her consent and after Cave Johnson's death, According to the CEO's will, the Aperture Science scientists forcibly implanted her mind into a computer, this will be the development of GLaDOS, the main artificial intelligence that runs Aperture Science.
Artificial intelligence has also been applied to other Aperture Science robots such as Turrets, Personality Cores and ATLAS and P-body as well as GLaDOS. Most personality cores are unable to communicate properly, but there are also artificial intelligences, such as Wheatley, that have independent human-level personalities. The fact that GLaDOS warns to Turrets that she will send them to Android Hell if they defiance to her, or sometimes Turrets say they are sorry for person they killed, suggests that Turrets can think for themselves. But Rocket Turret seems to have only a basic human tracking system.
