Artificial intelligence, or A.I.,[1] is the ability of computer systems to operate independently of living beings. The type of A.I. found in machines can range from subroutines that allow them to perform only the most basic functions, such as target tracking and directional movement, to enabling free will and abstract thought, making some artificial intelligences as intelligent as human beings, if not even more so.

Overview[edit]

Artificial intelligence is a field that Aperture Science has mainly studied, with many Aperture Science robots, including GLaDOS, having artificial intelligence. Black Mesa also has basic artificial intelligence technology used for Automatic Turrets and the Hazardous Environment Suits.

Black Mesa[edit]

The Black Mesa corporation incorporates artificial intelligence into the design of its Automatic Turrets and Hazardous Environment Suits.

HECU[edit]

The Hazardous Environment Combat Unit uses A.I. to control their Sentry Guns. This A.I. is only capable of basic human target recognition and tracking.

Aperture Science[edit]

Aperture Science is the only group that has developed human-level A.I. in the Half-Life and Portal universe. Cave Johnson, CEO of Aperture Science, began to research brain-mapping and artificial intelligence technology to back up his personality so he could continue to run the company even after his death. When he realized he was in danger of dying before the technology to save him could be completed, he appointed his secretary Caroline as his successor without her consent. In accordance with Johnson's wishes, Aperture Science scientists forcibly uploaded Caroline's mind to the Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, the artificial intelligence that was created to assume control of most of Aperture Science's operations after Johnson's death. The resulting being, GLaDOS, was homicidal, deploying neurotoxin that killed most of Aperture's employees.

Artificial intelligence has also been applied to other Aperture Science robots such as Turrets and Personality Cores as well as robotic Test Subjects such as ATLAS and P-body. Most personality cores are unable to communicate properly, but there are also artificial intelligences, such as Wheatley, that have independent human-level personalities. The fact that GLaDOS warns Turrets that she will send them to "Android Hell" if they disobey her, or the fact that Turrets sometimes apologize to people they have killed, suggests that Turrets can think for themselves. However, the Rocket Turret seems to only possess intelligence in the form of a basic human tracking system.

Combine[edit]

Combine use A.I. for Sentry Guns, Manhacks, City Scanners, Rollermines, and most prominently, the Overwatch Voice

Resistance[edit]

The Resistance member and former Black Mesa scientist Eli Vance created a powerful robot named Dog that possesses sophisticated AI, but lacks speech synthesis.
