"Wow. With that much security, there must be something good in there."
Barney Calhoun[src]

The Combine Ceiling Turret is an automated stationary pulse sentry weapon used by the Combine.

Overview[edit]

The Ceiling Turret is a type of static emplacement built into the ceiling of a room. They resemble a gun attached to a retractable stalk hanging down from a casing in the ceiling, giving them a striking similarity to Ceiling Cameras. Being virtually indestructible and having a wider firing arc than that of a regular Combine Sentry Gun, Ceiling Turrets are usually used to guard important Combine structures such as the Overwatch Nexus, either operating automatically or sometimes activated by laser tripwires. In Episode One, several Ceiling Turrets are seen trying to fire without any ammunition, suggesting that the turrets don't have an infinite amount of ammo, and should they not receive maintenance for a long time, could fall into disrepair. This being said, it is still unsure how exactly the turrets' ammunition is loaded and fed into the barrel.

Appearances[edit]

Half-Life 2[edit]

Ceiling Turrets are encountered only once in the game: six of them are present in the Overwatch Nexus, in the laser tripwire room. They appear dormant until one passes the tripwires. However, when the player does so, the game becomes impossible as the doors seal and the turrets deploy. Strangely enough, the failure message does not appear and the game does not reload, leaving the player trapped. Even if the player can avoid the turrets' fire and destroy them with sufficient fire, they will still be inescapable from the room until they die or reset.

Half-Life 2: Episode One[edit]

During Episode One, two Ceiling Turrets are found depleted of ammunition after firing at overwhelming numbers of Zombies and Antlions. However, the turrets still attempt to fire unaware of their lack of ammo, only making clicking trigger-like sounds they emit at hostile targets, further evidencing that the Combine is losing control over City 17.

Tactics[edit]

The Gravity Gun can be used to hold up props as makeshift shields, which is also a way to combat its portable counterparts. However, since the turrets have a tremendously high amount of health, it is best to simply avoid activating them.

Behind the scenes[edit]

Early brush Ceiling Turrets, called "Wall Turrets" can be found in the WC map pack map cremator_039, in a tunnel filled with wrecked cars. These turrets feature cameras mounted on a mechanical arm that constantly search for enemies. A different Wall Turret model can also be found in the Half-Life 2 leak files. It appears similar to the retail Ceiling Turret, except that it was to be mounted on walls and has no animations.

Turrets spawned through the console will be in a dormant state; however, using the advanced console command ent_fire npc_turret_ceiling activate it is possible to activate it, when it will deploy its gun and began scanning, and retract when no enemies are detected.

According to Valve Developer Community, the ceiling turrets are said to be "broken", including problems such as malfunctioning muzzle flash, sounds, and shooting animations.
