The Combine Heavy Shotgun[1] is the primary weapon of Combine Chargers in Half-Life: Alyx.

Overview[edit]

The Heavy Shotgun is of relatively large size, and appears to be box-fed and semi automatic. It is capable of devastating damage and can pose a serious threat to the player. Chargers use these weapons to dangerous effect, and it is especially lethal in close quarters. However, its fire rate is extremely slow with notable intervals between shots, and it also requires longer time to reload. It bears practically no similarity to its successor, and like the Pulse Rifle and Heavy Machine Gun, cannot be picked up or used by the player. If picked up in non-VR debug mode, it is shown to behave like the shotgun from Half-Life 2.

Behind the scenes[edit]

In the first released screenshots of Alyx, the Suppressor was shown to be using the Heavy Shotgun instead of the Heavy Machine Gun.

The model has a set of unused animations that reveal a Tau Cannon charging attachment[2] that extends and retracts from the top of the weapon.

Trivia[edit]

  • The rear of this weapon shares visual similarities with Alyx's Shotgun, suggesting the two are related in some way.
  • When firing, the Charger appears to pump the barrel of his shotgun after each shot, despite his weapon clearly not being pump-action. Similarly, despite appearing to be box-fed, the Charger will only feed in one shell to completely refill the weapon. This is most likely a developer oversight.
