The Combine Mounted Gun is a Combine artillery weapon featured in Half-Life: Alyx.

Overview[edit]

The Mounted Gun is transported in the back of a specialized Combine Prisoner Transport truck seated on a rotating platform and features a Force Field shield very similar to the kind used by Combine Chargers on the top of the gun to protect the operator. It has a unique firing mechanism, consisting of a handle located on the left side of the weapon which acts both as the trigger and the reloader, firing the weapon when pulled toward the operator and reloading shells when pushed forward. Highly-explosive grenades which detonate on impact are fed into the weapon through a large box magazine. Alyx Vance uses one of these weapons to defeat a Strider in the chapter Breaking and Entering.

Behind the Scenes[edit]

When designing the final Strider chase sequence, the final battle that would kill the Strider went through many iterations. One of them is to use a downed Combine helicopter to fire missiles, while others included using a Combine mortar emplacement or sweeping out the Strider's legs with physical objects. Finally the concept of a vehicle-mounted Combine gun was selected, but it still went over many variants from an auto-firing machine gun to a sticky-bomb launcher, before finally becoming the Mounted Gun.[1]
