"Uh-oh. Turrets. You've got the HEV Suit, you deal with them."
Barney Calhoun to Gordon Freeman[src]

The Combine Ground Turret is a ground-concealed automated pulse sentry weapon used by the Combine within the Overwatch Nexus.

Overview[edit]

Ground Turrets are only encountered in the Overwatch Nexus, where they are used to protect important areas, cover corridors and entrances, or guard security consoles to prevent them from being tampered with in the event of a break-in. They also guard rooms containing Combine power generators, as these are pivotal areas of the building used to give power to the entirety of the complex and the surrounding area.

They are built into the floor, emerging when the nearby laser tripwires are crossed by an intruder. The laser tripwires normally cover entrances in such a way that it is impossible to pass through them without activating the turrets. When they are crossed, the blue beams disappear, and the turrets emerge and begin scanning for intruders. After a while, if the turrets do not detect anything to fire at, they return to their idle state concealed in the ground, and the blue beams reappear.

When searching for targets, blue scanner fields emit from the turrets' fronts, which allow them to locate intruders and fire at them. The turrets' fire coverage is strictly limited to the cone of this scanner field, which obviously marks their range and makes them somewhat easy to avoid. However, when they do open fire, their high rate of fire can cause significant damage, and they are usually placed strategically to make avoiding them more difficult.

Tactics[edit]

Ground turrets can only be destroyed by rolling a grenade into the cavity beneath them and waiting for the grenade to explode, causing the turrets to withdraw into the floor, disabled. Whilst Barney indicates that Gordon is a prime candidate for the turrets' dismantlement because of his HEV Suit offering adequate protection, however even with a fully charged suit, it is likely that the player will only last a short while against their fire. For this reason, it is advised to try and crouch behind objects before trying to destroy them. Blocking the turrets' fire with a large item such as a table or rolling the grenade in from the sides is also advisable, as it is difficult to reach the turret directly without being fired at.

The turrets can only fire on intruders who are on the ground and will not detect them when, for instance, they are standing on top of another nearby turret. Jumping between turrets can be useful to avoid their fire.

It is possible to avoid Ground Turrets by running through the laser tripwires and sprinting past them whilst they are deploying. The player should then stand out of sight until they deactivate and tell the squad members to wait out of sight.

Behind the scenes[edit]

A video from Valve's 3D artist Derek Jenson demonstrates an earlier model for the Ground Turret, notably appearing as a single fully animated mesh rather than a static model merged with brushes.[1] The retail Ground Turret's texture sheet still features the parts not present in the final model.
