Overview[edit]
The barricades seen in the Half-Life 2 story arc range from small armored panels that can be set up in minutes to full-sized barricades cordoning off entire streets. They are made from durable jet-black colored metal, and instead of regular windows they have liquid-like, solid Force Field viewports that offers ample protection against weapons. The smaller barricades are usually used as mounts for Emplacement Guns, and can be deployed either alone or in groups of three, effectively creating tactical battlements. The larger ones are much better fortified, with the gates on ground level and an elevated platform on the second floor, providing a strategic high ground for troops to attack from. Their central gates are protected by Force Fields and Combine Cameras that only allow citizens with necessary identifications to pass. Another variant seen during the Uprising and in the Quarantine Zone consists of several foldable sections mounted on mechanical arms, forming a wall that cordons off wider passages. When opening, the gate panels fold up to the sides, granting access to the sealed areas. Some of them feature a button to control the gates, allowing only the Combine units stationed there to open it. Barricades are often installed in the streets and at Combine security checkpoints in City 17 as a way to restrict the citizens' movement and as defensive fortifications in street standoffs.
