Overview[edit]
Half-Life 2: Deathmatch[edit]
This map takes place in a location not too dissimilar from Black Mesa East and Kleiner's Lab. It features a working teleporter which warps players to a designated spot within the level. This designated spot is a room near the south hall containing two SMG grenades and a Shotgun under the stairs.
The maintenance hall contains two crates of infinite grenade and RPG ammo, as well as an interactable valve. Once interacted with, the pipes will start leaking gas and a small fire will start, ending with an explosion that damages anyone near it. This can be repeated multiple times. This hall has an opening that leads to a dead end full of supplies, such as suit energy and Medkits. The north hall also contains an interactable valve, however, a player must shoot at the leaking gas for a fire to start and an explosion to occur here. This explosion deals much more damage than the one in the maintenance hall.
Similar to Lockdown and Powerhouse, Steam Lab is a tight map with an emphasis on close-quarters combat and little room for players to move around. The map also contains a lot of physics props, such as cinderblocks, butane tanks and other various objects.
Half-Life 2: Survivor[edit]
Much like Lockdown, Survivor features several different versions of Steam Lab, meant to be played in teams of four in its Battle Mode, in which the active map changed every week. Steam Lab was only featured three times, and as such, it had three different revisions throughout the game's lifespan.
Behind the scenes[edit]
Steam Lab was designed as an homage to the original Half-Life multiplayer map Datacore.[1] The map's name was changed due to the departure from the original setting.[1]
As seen in the 2023 Source Internal Developer Repository leaks, the original file name for this map was "dm_labcore".
Trivia[edit]
The Headcrab on the reception area is the only instance of an alien creature in Deathmatch, and cannot be killed by any means, as it is merely an animated prop.
