contamination

Contamination is a map in the multiplayer mode of Half-Life. It was added to the game in the 25th Anniversary Update on November 17, 2023.[1]

Overview[edit]

Contamination is located outside a nuclear reactor, and the site appears to be primarily concerned with the handling of irradiated materials from the reactor's coolant system. Partially built into the mesa, the majority of Contamination takes place in courtyards surrounding the inner bowels of the complex. The outer edges of the map are relatively more cramped, including corridors and other tighter spaces.

In the middle parts of Contamination are two inner areas sealed off by a silo door. These areas include the Rocket Launcher and the Gluon Gun, though they are both placed on catwalks located extremely close to the waste. In order to acquire the Gluon Gun, the player must jump down from above and leave through the front entrance. This will set off an alarm, notifying other players on the map that a player has acquired it. They will also take radiation damage while inside the room.

The Long Jump Module cannot be found on this stage. However, the Hivehand and Crossbow are both plainly visible and easily accessible to players.

Backstory[edit]

“Two-foot-thick steel doors block off access to this contaminated waste facility, which has questionable scientific goals at best. Strap on a gluon gun and roast all intruders.”
