Stalkyard is a map in the multiplayer modes of Half-Life and its PlayStation 2 port as well as Half-Life Deathmatch: Source. It was included with Half-Life on release.

Overview[edit]

Stalkyard features a large storage area, seemingly located in the Black Mesa Research Facility. A warehouse section of the map contains numerous large boxes in storage, which can be broken and looted for supplies by players, and used as cover/concealment. An outdoors courtyard area is also featured, with two corridors that lead to the warehouse section of the map. Located on an elevated platform in this courtyard area is a Tripod-Mounted Heavy Machine Gun, which can be used by players.

Behind the scenes[edit]

The level is among the oldest made for the game. It was created before enemies and deathmatch support had been implemented, so in order to test it at this stage, the map was ported to Quake under the name warez_dm, with "warez" being short for "warehouse". Various weapon and ammo configurations were playtested here, and after it was brought back into Half-Life, further adjustments were made to accommodate the new weapons and player speed. At this point, the map received its final name, Stalkyard, which had been suggested by Marc Laidlaw.[2]

An early iteration of the map, still under the name warez_dm, is present in the Half-Life Alpha.
