HairBall is a Capture The Flag map in the multiplayer mode of Half-Life: Opposing Force. It was added in the Opposing Force CTF update.
Overview[edit]
HairBall is a tiny, symmetrical map that follows a similar design to 2Fort from the Team Fortress games, where the two teams' forts directly face one another. They are divided by a small, snowy path with a frozen river running across the middle that causes slippery movement. This central dividing area contains Penguins, a random Power-Up, and SMG grenades. A weighted Power-Up sits outside the front of both teams' bases. Both flags are located on balconies overlooking the other team's base, each having two ice-covered supply caches as their spawn point. The map has some small Xen growths dotted around for players to use the Barnacle Grapple on.
Due to its small size, matches on HairBall can quickly become chaotic when there are more than 6 players on a server. This chaos makes it difficult to capture the flags in this map.
Backstory[edit]
- "About once every 75 years, the temperature in the peaks over the Black Mesa facility drops to below freezing. A battle rages between the military and civilians. Supplies run low, and two smaller sorties are are cut off from the main conflict and find themselves in a small scale intense battle for control of the supply bunkers."

Behind the scenes[edit]
HairBall was originally created simply for demonstration purposes by designer Matthew Armstrong, but the level caught on and was eventually developed into a full-fledged map.[1] The level is included as an example map in the official Opposing Force Capture The Flag map development kit, released on August 31st, 2001.[2]
Trivia[edit]
Along with The Wonderland, when walking on the frozen river's ice, the player's movement becomes slippery and remains so on every surface even after stepping off of the ice.
