Rebel Medic[src]

The Medkit, also known as the Health Kit, is a healing item featured in the Half-Life series, often found scattered around high-risk areas where immediate medical attention is needed to prevent death. Along with the Battery, the Medkit is one of the most common props to be picked up in the games.

Appearances[edit]

Half-Life[edit]

In Half-Life, Medkits resemble white shoulder-slung medical packs with a Red Cross and the words "FIRST AID" printed on the casing. A small computer screen with buttons is seen on top of it. The amount of health Medkits recover depends on the difficulty level set in the game's settings. In Easy and Medium modes, Medkits will recover 15 health points. In Hard mode, Medkits will heal 10 health points. A small number of Medkits available will force players to use Health Chargers instead to recover a high amount of lost health, especially in Hard mode.

Half-Life 2[edit]

In Half-Life 2, Combine Medkits become the major source of healing throughout the game, as they are much more widely dispersed than Health Chargers which are often only found in Combine-controlled areas. Two Medkit variants are featured: the larger type, which appears to be a white kit with a green vial strapped to it, always gives 25 health points regardless of the difficulty setting. A smaller variant called the Health Vial, which is a single green cylinder, restores 10 Health and is often dropped from Combine Soldiers and Civil Protection officers upon their death, making them convenient in firefights. Medkits are also found prolifically in supply crates, which is useful when traveling in remote regions, such as the Wasteland or the Coast.

Similar to its counterpart in Half-Life, the Medkit sports predominantly white coloring, is labeled with the Red Cross, and bears the words "FIRST AID". it also features the Caduceus, a symbol commonly used as a symbol of medicine, and the abbreviation "M.S.E.". Both the Medkit and health vial contain what appears to be flesh tissue suspended in a green liquid, presumably the material used for healing.

Half-Life: Alyx[edit]

Half-Life: Alyx retroactively implies the green liquid seen in Half-Life 2's Medkits were extracted from Antlion Grubs as they are depicted being stored in similar vials and compressed by Health Chargers for their healing fluids. While the Health Charger is still used in this game, the functionality and presence of Medkits was replaced by Health Pens.

In other media[edit]

In Team Fortress Classic, the Medic's Medkit is based on Half-Life's model and serves as the class' melee weapon. The weapon is used either to heal teammates or to attack opponents by infecting them with a virus. In Deathmatch Classic, the Large Medkit item there is also based on Half-Life's model.

Trivia[edit]

In Half-Life 2, picking up health vials doesn't show the HUD icon shown when picking up Medkits; only the pickup sound is heard.
