"We worried about the crate cliché a lot during development. Finally we gave up, and one of the first things you see when you start the game is a crate. We figured that this was the Old Man Murray equivalent of throwing yourself to the mercy of the court."
Gabe Newell[src]

Originally manufactured and used by the Combine, Supply Crates are storage units exploited in great numbers by the Resistance to hold and provide health, ammunition, and energy provisions.

Overview[edit]

One of the rebel supply caches in the Outlands, featuring crates with attached transponders.

Supply crates visually differ from normal wooden crates by their much smaller size and the word "supply" with a bar code in a yellow square printed on them. Much like other objects, crates can be picked up and destroyed by the Gravity Gun or the Crowbar in one hit, regardless of the difficulty setting. What is found in the crate depends on the player's status, for example, if the player's health is low, the supply crate will usually provide a medkit. If the player's status doesn't require any specific items, a random piece of ammo used by a weapon that the player has will be inside the crate.

After leaving Station 21 in Episode Two, the supply crates encountered are equipped with Transponders, allowing Gordon and Alyx to find them easier with the radar mounted on their Muscle Car.

The supply crate also has a variant called the "infinite ammo crate", which are olive-green metal trunks that contain infinite ammo of one type. They cannot be moved or destroyed and will resupply every time they are opened or hit with a crowbar. RPG infinite ammo crates often hint at an important battle to come, most of the time involving one or more Combine Gunships or Striders. Standard wooden crates are generally located near a Lambda logo, while infinite ammo crates are placed in Combine or Resistance-controlled areas.

During Half-Life: Alyx, the Combine uses an early kind of supply crate, with the wooden box being flatter and more rectangular in shape and the contents inside protected by a layer of styrofoam pieces. The supply crates in Alyx contain ammunition or a single Health Pen.

Behind the scenes[edit]

Some texture files show that the Half-Life 2 infinite ammo crates were also to provide ammo for the .357 Magnum and the crossbow. They can still be added with Hammer but will display the "ERROR" model because the crate models are missing.

The Alyx model is based on a 5.45×39mm cartridges ammo crate, introduced with the Soviet AK-74 assault rifle.
